Do you have babies or toddlers who dislike brushing? How do you help them love brushing?
In our experience, Enzo loved brushing his teeth even when he was still very young. Now at his age of 6, he still loves to brush his teeth. We didn’t really have problems with him brushing so I thought of writing some tips on how we did it.
Choose a cute or interesting toothbrush
A cute brush can motivate our kids to brush their teeth. I remember using a spaceship toothbrush for Enzo when he was little. He was interested in space and planets so a spaceship brush made him want to brush every time. It can make brushing really interesting for our kids. I also saw some brush with lights and butterfly designs which are really perfect for our kids. TIP: Buy a toothbrush that has extra soft bristles, and has flexible handles.
Sing songs of brushing teeth
There are so many available brushing teeth songs available on youtube. Though I wouldn’t suggest screentime for 0-2 years old, you may make them listen to these songs before and during brushing. It would create an atmosphere of playing while brushing their teeth. Also, singing songs when they are anxious of brushing may calm them down and start brushing. TIP: Do action songs before brushing and it will be easier for them to do it while they brush.

Bring a brushing buddy
It is a good technique to make use of their favorite toy in teaching them how to brush their teeth. Start a story using their toy and show them that even their toys are brushing their teeth. Then you can actually bring the toy with them while brushing so they would feel more comfortable. It can also be a good opportunity for you to ask your kid to teach their toy how to brush their teeth.
Use Natural, Fruit Flavored Toothpaste
Kids are more motivated to brush their teeth if they like how it tastes. So the flavor really matters a lot to motivate them to brush. Choose natural, fruit-flavored, and not-so-minty toothpaste so it will not be strong tasting when they brush.
Tip: Try Colgate Natural Fruit Flavor toothpaste for 1-2 years old, and 3-5 years old.
Brush as a Family
One good way of encouraging our children to brush is if they see us brushing. We are their role models and whatever we do makes them want to imitate us. Imitating our daily lives makes them feel like adults so it is somewhat a good motivation for them to brush. It is also a good bonding moment to brush with the entire family.
Teach them the importance of brushing
The best way to make our kids brush is to teach them its importance. We have to slowly explain to them the need to brush their teeth. Doing so makes the task purposeful making it easier for them to follow. We can never underestimate our child’s intellect and understanding when things are well explained to them. If it gets hard for you to explain, here are books you can check out: https://childrensdentalcentersf.com/five-books-about-brushing-teeth.
Encouraging our kids to brush their teeth regularly forms a habit as they grow old. They learn mostly by the experiences they have so make sure that brushing their teeth is one of the meaningful experiences they will have. Make sure that we don’t scare them of monsters but instead tell them the logic of brushing.
So in creating healthier habits for our young kids, Colgate is now offering their new products that are safe for our babies and toddlers.
Now it’s even easier and fun to teach our kids to brush their teeth!
